Arias on China Tour
Costa Rican president,
Oscar Arias Sanchez,
arrived in China Monday
morning (local time),
kicking off an one-week
state visit to China at
the invitation of
Chinese President Hu
Jintao.
During Arias' stay in
Beijing, the two leaders
will be holding talks.
Chinese top legislator
Wu Bangguo and Premier
Wen Jiabao will also
meet with Ariash, who
besides the capital
Beijing, will also visit
northwestern city of
Xi'an and China's
commercial hub Shanghai.
This is the first time
for Arias to visit China
since he took office.
China and Costa Rica
posted us$1.56 billion
dollars of bilateral
trade in the first seven
months of this year, up
61.3 percent
year-on-year. The
Chinese side predicted
that trade for the whole
of 2007 will reach us$3
billion dollars, up from
us$2.16 billion dollars
reported last year.
On 1 June 2007, Costa
Rica switched diplomatic
recognition from Taiwan
to China, making Costa
Rica the 167th nation in
the world to do so.
