Tropical Wave Misses
Costa Rica; Guanacaste
Still Underwater
The Instituto
Meteriologico Nacional (IMN)
informed this morning
that the Tropical Wvave
expected today that was
to have dumped more
water on the country has
moved on, missing Costa
Rica entirely.
The news brings a sigh
of relief to residents
of Guanacaste and the
Central and South
Pacific coasts and the
more than 2.500 living
in shelters while their
homes are still under
water.
The rain of the last two
weeks resulted in a
declaration of a
national emergency that
allows government
agencies to trasnfer
funds to the Comisión
Nacional de Emergencias
(CNE) - national
emergency commission -
who is heading the
relief efforts.
The ministerio de Salud
(Health ministry) is
concerned of the
spreading of disease
like dengue, malaria and
other viruses as people
sleep wherever and drink
contaminated water and
exposing themselves to
mosquito bites.
Some of the hardest hit
areas are in Guanacaste,
especially the community
of Filadelfia, north to
Liberia and south as far
down as Santa Cruz,
where washed out roads
have separated
communities, bridges
have had to be closed
damaged by the raging
waters, some closed
completely waiting to be
rebuilt.
