Fierce Electoral Race in
Guatemala
The Supreme Electoral
Court (TSE) of Guatemala
is preparing Friday for
the November 4 runoff
elections, with
expectations of a very
close race between
Alvaro Colom and Otto
Perez Molina.
TSE president Oscar
Bolanos will meet with
the two candidates to
ask them for good sense
and to accept the poll's
official result.
"You must respect the
people's will when
voting," said Bolanos
after recalling that
fierce results are a
phenomenon in Latin
America.
In the first round of
the September 9
elections, Colom, from
the National Unity of
Hope (UNE), was first
with 28.3 percent of
votes, five points above
his rival Perez Molina,
from the Patriotic Party
(PP), with 23.51
percent.
According to the Vox
Latina Co. survey, the
PP aspirant has more
support among Latin
people, while the UNE
contender is favorite
among indigenous people.
Perez Molina promised to
control crime and
violence, while Colom
says he'll improve the
economy, create jobs and
support rural people. |
