Latin American
intellectuals called the
resistance of the
Patriotic Movement in
Costa Rica against a
free trade agreement
with the United States
"heroic, fair and very
honourable," and warned
of the disastrous
consequences of that
deal.
Prominent figures from
literature, fine arts,
dance, music and
religion from different
countries signed a
manifesto of the Mexican
Chapter of the Artists
and Intellectuals
Network in Defense of
Humanity, founded here
in October 2003.
"We take the heroic and
unequal battle of the
Patriotic Movement for
No FTA as our own; we
are pleased about its
capacity to join
different popular
expressions in a just
cause," said the text
signed, among others, by
Nobel Peace Prize winner
Argentinean Adolfo Perez
Esquivel.
The signatories of the
manifesto, including
Mexican Bishops Samuel
Ruiz and Raul Vera, and
academic Hector Diaz
Polanco, accused Costa
Rican President Oscar
Arias' administration of
trying to reach that
goal "with anti
democratic wiles."
