Puntarenas remains the
best club in the region
despite the fall of 33
places to 139th in the
world club ranking
published on Wednesday
by the International
Football History and
Statistics Federation.
The fall was caused by a
loss to Saprissa, also
from Costa Rica, in the
quarterfinals of the
Central American
Football Union (Uncaf)
Inter-club Tournament.
The second in the region
is Honduras's Motagua,
166th worldwide,
followed by Guatemala's
Municipal, 211th and two
Costa Rican club's
Alajuelense, 214th and
Saprissa 220th.
The Uncaf tournament
semifinals feature
Saprissa facing
Alajuelense and Motagua
tackling Municipal: the
region's second to fifth
rated clubs.
The Uncaf tournament
features 16 clubs
comprising the champions
and runners-up in local
leagues and offers three
places in the 2008
Confederation of North,
Central American and
Caribbean Association
Football (Concacaf) Cup.
