Raging Waters Destroys
10 Homes, Damages 200
and Leave 1.000 Affected
Some 1.000 people and
200 homes, 10 completely
destroyed, were affected
yesterday afternoon by a
water current that swept
through various
communities in Cartago,
leaving behind
destruction and despair,
but fortunately no
fatalities.
The current was a result
of the river Taras
overflowing its banks
and passing through
Quircot and Lima,
reminding residents of
the devastation of
December 9, 1963.
The emergency occurred
at 2:20pm when
torrential rain fell on
the greater part of
Cartago, especially in
the northern sector of
Llano Grande where a dam
formed.
When the dam broke, the
water, loaded with mud,
just swept through
everything in its path,
reminding some residents
when the Reventado river
destroyed everything in
its path 44 years ago.
In addition to the
damage to the homes,
engineers are evaluating
damage to four bridges
in La Lima, Quircot,
Llano Grande and Taras.
In addition, the
engineers and geologists
are assessing the
possibility of the build
up of other dams that
can cause another
avalanche.
The Comision Nacional de
Emergemcias (CNE) set up
a temporary shelter in
La Lima to house those
affected
