The Tribunal Supremo de
Elecciones (TSE) -
elections tribunal - is
keeping an eye on the
daily press on news
reports on the Tratado
de Libre Comercio (TLC).
According to TSE
president, Luis Antonio
Sobrado, the information
is an additional service
for voters, as the
results are published on
the TSE webpage.
The TSE hired Controles
Videotécnicos de Costa
Rica who has been
keeping close tabs on
who and what is being
published regarding the
free trade deal with the
United States.
Some of the results of
the monitoring between
July 22 and September 22
reveal that Telenoticias
(television channel 7
news) has broadcast 12
reports in favour and 12
against the trade and
100 reports qualified as
neutral. In opinion, the
news station did not
broadcast any in favour
or against and 18
neutral opinions.
Repretel (channel 6
news) broadcast 56
stories in favour, 32
against and 235 deemed
neutral. As to opinion,
the television station
had 10 in favour, 8
against and 14 neutral.
In the print media, the
La Nación printed 36
reports in favour of the
TLC, 15 against and 87
neutral. In the opinion
columns, the newspaper
published 84 in favour,
49 against and 90
neutrals.
As to the Diario Extra,
the most daily read
newspaper according to
its own promotions, it
ran 59 stories in favour
of the TLC, 37 against
and 97 neutrals. In
opinion, it ran 46
articles in favour, 53
against and 36 neutrals.
The monitoring is of the
print, radio and
television media and
does not include
internet news websites.
