President Arias Gives
His Reasons For Voting
Yes on Sunday
At 8:00pm sharp last
night, Costa Rican
president, Oscar Arias
Sanchez, went on
national television to
explain the reasons why
Costa Ricans should vote
"Si" (in favour) of the
Tratado de Libre
Comercio (TLC) - free
trade agreement with the
United States - in this
Sunday's referendum.
"I am going to say Si
for you, the young,
because the TLC will
mean more employment
opportunities for those
who are tired of
submitting curriculums
from company to company
without getting a job.
I am going to say Si for
you, homemakers, because
the TLC will mean lower
prices at the corner
store, supermarkets and
retail shops, where you
shop.
I am going to say Si for
you, farmers, small and
medium sized producers,
because the TLC will
mean access for your
products to a larger
markert withou paying
duties and better prices
for the machinery and
tools you need to work
with", were the words of
the president asking
Costa Ricans to vote Si
on October 7.
Arias emphasized that
for many years he has
fought for Costa Rica
along with Costa Ricans.
"We have been together
through economic crisis,
times of prosperity,
when threatened by war
and when we achieved
peace, and for such we
can face the challenges
of the future before us
and choose the best road
for our community.
"You elected me to make
decisions, you elected
me to build a better
country, you elected me
to bring back the
confidence in that it is
possible to strive for
more development without
leaving anyone behind",
said Arias.
According to Arias the
trade deal does not put
at risk any political or
social aspect of the
country that was left to
us by Do Pepe and don
Rafael Ángel Calderón
Guardia.
The TLC does not risk
the Caja (the Caja
Costarricense de Seguro
Social - CCSS), nor
place ICE at risk, nor
the INS, nor the public
universities, and nor
any other public
institution that has
made us the country we
are today". |
