Venezuela on alert against sabotages due to
RCTV's closing
Venezuela's National Guard was on complete alert
on Friday in the capital to prevent possible
sabotages following the closing down of
right-wing Radio Caracas television (RCTV).
The National Guard deployed anti-riot police,
patrol cars, among other means in different
parts of the capital to avoid conflicts due to
RCTV's closing.
Meanwhile, University students continued to
protest on Friday against the closing of RCTV
for the seventh consecutive day in Caracas and
other cities in Venezuela.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez decided not to
renew RCTV's operation license because it backed
the April 2002 coup d'etat that separated Chavez
from power for 48 hours, media reports said.
On Thursday night Chavez warned about the
dangers Venezuelan democracy faces and of
possible sabotages against the new Venezuelan
Social Television (TVes), channel that will
substitute RCTV.
