Latin America Progress in Panama Social Summit
The Alternative Social Summit, to be held in
Panama June 3 and 4, intends to become a
platform for discussion of proposals on Latin
American integral development.
Miguel Angel Candanedo, general secretary of the
University of Panama, asserted that the parallel
meeting to that of the Organization of American
States will raise regional problems, such as
health, education, and poverty.
Candanedo, who is also coordinator of the
Movement of United People for our America,
Panama chapter, denounced that the United States
will use the OAS session to analyze its issues,
like drug traffic, the energy crisis and
terrorism.
The alternative summit will discussed such
issues as the US invasion of Iraq, the role of
the OAS, the energy problem and climate change,
regional human and social rights and integration
and development models, particularly the
Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas.
