Strong Latin American Presence at Cannes
Latin American actors and producers, with Mexico
in the lead, send a strong message at the 60th
Cannes Film Festival.
"Deficit" of Gael Garcia Bernal runs for the
Golden Camera at the Critics Week that runs
parallel to the Festival.
Another three Mexicans present are producers
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Amores Perros,
Babel) and Alfonso Cuaron (Y Tu Mama Tambien),
and actor Diego Luna.
Uruguayan Cesar Charlone co-produced with
Enrique Fernandez of "El baño del Papa", a story
on how Melo village readied for the 1988 visit
by Pope John Paul II.
The film reflects the dichotomy between the
philosophies teeming with promises and the
region boasting the highest unemployment rates
in Uruguay and devastating poverty.
Mexican Guillermo del Toro brought "El Orfanato"
(the Orphanage) with Spanish Juan Antonio Bayona,
a terror film co-starred by Belen Rueda and
Geraldine Chaplin, and a success with critics
and the public.
