Guatemala Police Not Enough to Fight Crime
Both the scarcity of police and incorrect
assignments are hampering Guatemala's National
Police to effectively fight crime in this
Central American country.
According to police authorities, although the
national police technically has 23,000 agents,
only 18,500 are currently fighting crime since
3,000 are assigned to security for
personalities, embassies, and other functions,
and another 1,500 were suspended.
Minister of Government Adela de Torrebiarte
declared that while the number of police remains
the same, requests for providing security in
different areas is never ending.
International standards for the rates of
violence in the country, where 5,000 people were
killed last year, indicate Guatemala should have
at least 100,000 police on active duty.
