Legislature May Recess Before TLC Referendum
The Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) deputies
of the Legislative Assembly are not convinced
fully on approving a legislative recess prior to
the referendum on the Tratado de Libre Comercio
(TLC) - free trade agreement with the United
States, Central America and the Dominican
Republic.
Mayi Antillón, head of the PLN legislators, said
the legislature has too many pending work and
the recess would be an inconvenience to the
process.
The referendum is tentatively scheduled to be
held on Sunday 23 September, The Tribunal
Supremo de Elecciones (TSE) is expected to make
the date firm at its general meeting in the
first week of June.
The recess that would allow legislators to visit
their communities and answer questions on the
TLC, would close the legislative process on
established days and is being spearheaded by
Frente Amplio party legislator, José Merino, who
is opposed to the TLC.
Merino made a formal request for the recess last
Thursday before the heads of the various parties
and is waiting a response.
Antillón says her party is against the time off
as the legislature is behind schedule and here
are important legislation to deal with that need
to advance and that legislators can visit their
communities and work for or against the TLC
during weekends.
Antillón added that PLN legislators have already
decided on dedicating the last few weekends to
tour their communities and give positive talks
about the TLC,
