Panama Roars over Negroponte Visit
US Undersecretary of State, John Negroponte,
started a Panama visit amid protests, and tried
to focus on economic issues.
Panamanian foreign minister Samuel Lewis told
press that one of the items to tackle with him
is the Free Trade Treaty between the two
countries, waiting to be ratified by US
Congress.
On his stay Negroponte will meet President
Martin Torrijos.
The visit is rejected by students, unions and
grassroots organizations in Panama.
Saul Mendez, president of the National Front for
the Defense of Economic and Social Rights (FRENADESO)
said Negroponte was a harmful figure.
Protesting youth blocked the central Avenue and
other important streets as part of the
demonstration.
