Ortega Refuses Trans-Oceanic Canal
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega warned that
building a transoceanic canal through Lake
Nicaragua "is not worth all the gold in the
world".
"I think that would put the lake at risk. Not
for all the gold in the world we should endanger
the lake," said Ortega, explaining the official
forestry policy.
He called to study the viability of other
projects even if they are more expensive than
the us$18 billion dollar canal project and
refused to pollute the largest drinkable water
reserve of Nicaragua and Central America.
Ex President Enrique Bolanos said last October
that Lake Nicaragua is the most viable route
from the Rivas Isthmus, in the south, through
the Lake, to Bluefields' Bay, in the Caribbean.
Ortega, in office since January 10, also opposed
building a hydroelectric plant in central
Nicaragua due to ecological and social concerns.
