Teachers Strike Ends in Guatemala
The strike maintained by Guatemalan teachers during 17 days concluded Wednesday with an agreement among the demonstrators and the government which established commissions to negotiate the salary and labor demands of the sector.

Sergio Morales, a human rights prosecutor, said that the classes will be renewed in the whole territory next Friday and teachers will restore the lost time during the unemployment.

On the other hand Guatemalan President Oscar Berger, will issue a resolution on Monday, that will put an end to the deprivation processes and other sanctions against the protest participants, Morales added.

The agreement was signed in the headquarters of the Guatemalan Archbishop Office which acted as mediator in the negotiations, together with the Human Rights Attorney Office.

The pact includes an analysis to extend the study of teaching careers to four years.

The discussions will also continue around a Collective Agreement of Work where salary increases settle down, permissions for absence and other labor benefits.
