Teacher Sit-ins Storm Guatemala
Guatemalan teachers are due to
stage a sit-in across from the
Government Palace on Tuesday, to
demand authorities commitments
to that sector.
The Educators demands include
salary increase, negotiation of
a collective working pact,
snacks and school materials to
17,400 educational institutions,
and promulgation of a law to end
sanction processes against
workers of the sector in force
since 2004.
About 257 teachers, 67 from the
capital and 190 from
departments, run the risk of
being expelled for their
participation in protests.
Representatives from the
teachers union and the Education
Ministry are expected to meet
for a sixth consecutive time
today, sponsored by the Human
Rights Law Office and the
Archbishopric, to try to find a
solution to the conflict.
