Fuel Prices Increase in
Nicaragua
The director of the Nicaraguan
Energy Institute (INE), David
Castillo, declared that the
institution he heads cannot stop
the escalation of fuel prices,
which are subject to market
laws.
"Importing and refining
hydrocarbons is completely
free," said Castillo Tuesday,
commenting on the twelfth
consecutive increase in fuel
prices in a similar number of
weeks.
One litre of super or special
gasoline was priced at us$1.07
dollars in Managua on Monday,
while regular gasoline was
quoted at about one dollar and
the litter of diesel cost
us$0.80 dollar.
Venezuelan oil, which is
imported in Nicaragua as part of
agreements signed within the
framework of the Bolivarian
Alternative for the Americas
(ALBA), also guarantees the
functioning of 32 power plants
donated by Caracas to palliate
Nicaragua's energy crisis.
