Rigoberta Menchu Backs Cubans
Nobel Peace Prizewinner
Rigoberta Menchu reiterated her
support to the Cuban people s
fair cause and rejected the
release in the US of Luis Posada
Carriles, mastermind of several
terrorist actions against the
Revolution.
"I have always identified with
the struggle for Cuba s free
determination," the candidate to
Guatemala s presidency told
Prensa Latina, by explaining her
joining the international call
for Posada Carriles trial.
Menchu, along with Nobel
Prizewinners Adolfo Perez
Esquivel, Nadine Gordimer,
Harold Pinter and Zhores
Alfiorov, is on the list of some
5,000 world figures who demand
trying that infamous terrorist.
Posada Carriles is the
mastermind of the 1976 mid-air
explosion of a Cuban airplane
that killed 73 people, among
them the island s fencing team.
He prepared in 1997 a series of
bomb attacks in Havana hotels,
in which Italian tourist Fabio
Di Celmo was killed, and
organized an assassination
attempt against Cuban President
Fidel Castro, on occasion of his
visit to that country in 2000.
About 100 Guatemalan political,
social and cultural figures, as
well as several organizations
joined the document demanding to
try Posada Carriles.
