Panamanian First Lady Denies
Political Aspirations
Panama's First Lady, Vivian
Fernandez de Torrijos, denied on
Thursday press versions of her
alleged intention to aspire to
the presidency in the elections
of 2009.
In remarks to RPC Radio, the
wife of President Martin
Torrijos said they were just
rumors stemming from her social
work to favor the poor.
"Here in this country, when
people work or when they are
seen as doing any kind of work,
they are automatically
considered as having a political
aspiration," she said.
According to media reports,
among possible candidates for
the top post are former
president Ernesto Perez
Balladares and Foreign Minister
Samuel Lewis Navarro, from the
ruling Democratic Revolutionary
Party.
Another possible candidate
mentioned is Mayor of Panama
City Juan Carlos Navarro.
