Cuban Medics Stay On in
Guatemala
The Cuban medical
brigade arrived in
Guatemala eight years
back to help the
communities battered by
Hurricane Mitch.
They have stayed to help
avoid deaths from
preventable illnesses
like diarrhea,
parasites, pneumonia,
rotavirus, dengue,
cholera, malaria, Tb and
AIDS.
They offer workshops for
local hospital workers
and health clinics,
lecture on risks and are
involved in the
vaccination campaign and
social and environmental
problems like crime,
poverty and malnutrition
as well as biological
diseases.
They conducted a study
of leading causes of
death, revealing high
rates of violent deaths
among 15 to 49 year
olds, and helped fight
child abuse by training
an anti-abuse staff.
Guatemalans recognize
the useful work of the
Cuban brigade and even
if they are must walk
miles, they always head
to a community where
there is a Cuban doctor
