Guatemalans Decidedly
Undecided
Only 74 days before the
elections in Guatemala,
40 percent of voters are
undecided among the main
presidential hopefuls, a
poll revealed on
Wednesday.
The survey, the fourth
by Vox Latina for Prensa
Libre and Nuestro Diario
dailies and Guatevision
TV channel, was
conducted on 1,200
Guatemalans from all
parts of the country,
June 15-23.
According to their
intention, the
front-runner is Alvaro
Colom, from Unidad
Nacional de la
Esperanza, but he is in
first place with only
20.75 percent, Colom is
followed by Otto Perez
Molina, from Partido
Patriota, with 12.25
percent, and Alejandro
Giammattei, of Gran
Alianza Nacional, has
8.17 percent.
What is most striking in
the new poll is that
less than two and a half
months from election
day, a large percentage
is still undecided.
Analyst Hugo Maul, of
the National Economic
Research Center, says
these results notify
candidates of their lack
of clear leadership and
concrete proposals.
Maul attributes
electoral apathy to poor
achievements by the last
governments, and
proselytizing campaigns
based on nothing but
promises. |
