Panama to become FAO's
regional headquarters in
Central America
Panama City will be the
Central American
headquarters of the Food
and Agriculture
Organization of the
United Nations (FAO),
Panamanian Minister of
Agriculture and
Livestock Development
Guillermo Salazar told
media on Tuesday.
FAO made the
decision during its June
18-22 meeting in Rome,
Italy, where FAO is
headquartered, Salazar
said.
The FAO regional
headquarters will be
located in the former
Clayton Military Base,
which has been
re-developed into Ciudad
del Saber (The City of
Knowledge), and it is
expected to start
operation at the end of
this year.
Salazar said the move
would help boost FAO's
decentralization plans
and "offer opportunities
for agriculture
professionals to
contribute effort and
knowledge."
The organization already
has a regional office in
Chile, which hosts a
49-member working
committee.
FAO, founded in 1945,
aims to alleviate world
malnutrition and hunger
and serves as a
co-coordinating agency
for development programs
in the whole range of
food and agriculture,
including forestry and
fisheries. |
