expects Venezuela's return to CAN
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe on Thursday
urged to do everything possible for Venezuela to
return to the Andean Community of Nations (CAN)
during the bloc's 17th summit.
"Venezuela's return to CAN is important. Let's
seek it," Uribe said.
Uribe also suggested that CAN's subregional bloc
general secretary Freddy Ehlers, of Ecuador,
would talk with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
to find out what is necessary for his country to
return to CAN.
"We have to find out what CAN norms must be
changed for Chavez to return according to his
international trade views," he said.
Chavez "should not feel he must go against his
economic and political beliefs," Uribe said
during the closing of the 17th Andean
Presidential Council's Ordinary Meeting (CPA)
held on Thursday in Tarija, south of Bolivia.
Chavez withdrew Venezuela from CAN in April
2006, after a 30 year membership, stating that
the bloc was "dead" and decided to introduce his
country as a full member of the Southern Common
Market (Mercosur), the other South American bloc
in the region.
