CNN Rumbles Guatemala over Tremor
Guatemalan
press commented on the panic provoked Wednesday
when CNN described a tremor as an earthquake,
which caused quite a rumble.
"Although the word earthquake and tremor are
similar semantically, the connotation is
different for those living in countries with
high telluric activity," noted a Prensa Libre
editorial.
An earthquake causes death and destruction and a
tremor is a less intense movement with no
considerable damage, noted the famous newspaper.
The CNN report was based on the information
granted by US Geological Services by which the
movement had an intensity of 6.8 on the Richter
scale, but the national register reported 5.4,
over 100 times less.
There were no victims or considerable material
damage of the earthquake but panic, mainly in
residents abroad, made the telephone system
collapse due to the insistent calls.
In declarations to the press, President Oscar
Berger urged calm inside and outside the
country.
