Argentina's opposition figure leads exit polls
in capital's mayor race
Argentina's soccer boss from the center-right
opposition Mauricio Macri on Sunday won the
first round of the elections for the post of
mayor of Buenos Aires, the Sunday exit polls
showed.
Macri, president of Argentina's most popular
soccer team, would vie for the second round of
the mayoral elections against government-backed
candidate Daniel Filmus, polls said.
According to the polls, Macri garnered 43
percent of the votes, while Buenos Aires has 2.5
million residents and candidates must win 50
percent of the votes to avoid a two-candidate
run-off.
Education Minister Filmus won 25 percent of the
votes while the sitting mayor Jorge Telerman won
21 percent.
Argentine authorities estimated that the final
result will be available at midnight local time,
but said they were likely to release the
preliminary results starting at 9:00 p.m. local
time.
Macri, 48, won a Buenos Aires congressional seat
two years ago on pledges of efficient government
and pro-business policies and is seen as a
potential leader of the country's weakened
rightist opposition.
