Proposal Made For the
Creation of A Central
American State
Some time in the not so
distant future, the map
of the North American
continent may have a new
country, the United
States of Central
America.
The idea was discussed
at a meeting of the
Parlamento
Centroamericano (Parlacen)
- the Central American
parliament - who heard
the proposal by Honduran
president, Manuel Zelaya,
of the creation of one
passport and a common
currency by the Central
American governments.
Zelaya added to his
proposal the idea of
creating a central
government body.
Analyst Rodrigo Carreras
considers that the
proposal makes no
sense for Costa Rica at
this time. And though it
seems illogical, "the
streets" are divided on
the issue, according to
Carreras.
The Parlacen is the only
body currently that where
advances in integration
on commerce, health and
customs can occur.
Currently, the Central
American countries
taking advantage of
regional unity are
Honduras, Guadalupe, El
Salvador and Nicaragua,
where only an identity
card is required for
travel between the
countries.
Central Americans
travelling to Costa Rica
