2.687 Earthquakes
Recorded For First Half
of 2007
Costa Rica is shaking
and rolling, as the Red
Sismológica de la
Universidad Nacional (RSN)
- the seismological
network - says it
recorded 2.687 quakes
during the first half of
the year.
Only 23 were felt by the
general population.
The month with the most
seismic activity was May
with major 10 shakes.
The RSN says that the
numbers is similar to
the activity during the
same period in 2006.
The most activity for
2007 was centres in the
areas of the Central
Valley, San Vito in the
southern zone and the
Caribbean.
The RSN says that
seismic activity was low
in the northwest part of
the country from the
north point of
Puntarenas province to
the Guanacaste province.
The movements in the
Central Pacific are
attributed to the Coco
and Caribe plates, while
shakes from volcanic
activity are attributed
to the Turrialba and
Arenal volcanoes.
RSN records show that
during the month May,
120 shakes daily were
recorded.
This month, the Arenal
volcano is its 39th year
of continuous activity.
