Nicaragua: No More
Blackouts
Nicaragua will start
2008 without the
blackouts that were
common this year due to
the shortage of
hydrocarbons to generate
electricity, Nicaraguan
media trumpeted on
Thursday.
La Prensa, El Nuevo
Diario and radio and TV
stations headlined these
declarations by Minister
of Energy and Mines
Emilio Rappaccioli, who
pointed out yesterday
that there would be no
longer need for
electricity rationing
since the country will
have a 20 percent
hydrocarbon reserve to
avoid blackouts.
The official said that
on January 10, at the
very latest, an
agreement will be signed
with Esso Standard Oil
to enable the supply and
process 10 million
barrels of petroleum
yearly.
Thanks to the
understanding between
ALBA Nicaragua SA and
Venezuela Petroleum SA (PDVSA)
the plan will offer
solidarity credit
facilities to the
Central American nation,
within the integration
process.
The minister also spoke
of plans to prospect and
evaluate potential
combustibles on the
Atlantic and Pacific
coasts of Nicaragua. |
