2008 School Year Commences February 11
The Ministerio de Educación Pública (MEP) announced yesterday that the 2008 school year will begin on February 11, as one million students head back to school.

The MEP also set mid year school break as July 7 to 18. School also breaks for vacation during Semana Santa (Easter week), and other national holidays, like September 15, independence day.

Alejandrina Mata, viceminister of Education, said the 2008 school year will be 205 days, five more than the 2007 school year.

The additional days is to allow teachers five professional days, when teachers use the time to upgrade their skills during conferenes.

An interesting point to note is that a number of "legal" holidays fall during weekends and not during the week, like October 12, which is a Sunday.
