Costa Rica Increase Its Foreign Promotion
Costa Rica has been promoting itself to the world, with a growth this year of 20% over last, being present at 54 international events, according to the Promotora de Comercio Exterior (Procomer).

Procomer press manager, Martín Zuñiga, said this year Costa Rica varied its strategy, giving less training but increasing direct marketing using resources in our 10 offices in different countries.

Its participation in fairs, expos and some direct marking in supermarket has generated some us$58 million dollars in business, according to Procomer who only takes into account direct sales from its efforts.

Costa Rica was represented in Houston, Miami and New York fairs, as well as in China, Chile and the Czech Republic, to name a few of the locations, according to Zuñiga.

"In Costa Rica we practically do not have unemployment, which is great, but also a disadvantage as companies have problems finding technical workers", added Zuñiga.

The Cámara de Exportadores confirmed the lack of professionals as a stumbling block to meet the exports goal set by Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias, of us$18 billion dollars by 2010.

"Costa Rica is an economy with a lot of growth potential but is limited due to the lack of workers", said Zuñiga, which is proposing permitting the arrival of more foreign workers, if only in the short term.

This year more than 30.000 Nicaraguans were given permission to enter the Costa Rican work force, mainly to perform agricultural work, like picking coffee and harvesting sugar cane.
