Effective Social Policies Urgently Needed in Latin America, Arias Says
Costa Rica's ministro de la Presidencia and brother to president Oscar Arias said last night that Latin America urgently needs effective social policies to improve people's quality of life.

The "most important task" for the governments of Ibero America is to promote the development of effective social policies, said Arias, at the inauguration of the 11th Ibero-American Presidential Ministers and Equivalent Meeting being held in San José.

Arias said the only effective way to decrease poverty is generating and distributing prosperity by implementing progressive tax systems and strong social programs, among others.

"We have no right to ask poor and excluded people for patience. They do have the right to ask us for action and give them accounts of what we have done," Arias said.
