More than 150
International Observers
To Be Present For
Referendum
The Tribunal Supremo de
Elecciones (TSE)is
expecting some 150
international
"observers" to attend
the October 7 referendum
on the Tratado de Libre
Comercio (TLC) - free
trade agreement with the
United States.
The TSE informed
yesterday in a press
release that the
observers are part of a
group from the United
Nations, the Carter
Centre, the European
Union, the Organization
of American States
(OAS), the Instituto
Internacional para la
Democracia y la
Asistencia Electoral,
among others.
The number of observes
is more than the number
present during the 2006
presidential elections
when between 80 and 100
international observers
were present in Costa
Rica.
The referendum is asking
all Costa Ricans to vote
on the future of the
trade deal, Costa Rica
being the only country
in Central America to
not have ratified the
Central America Free
Trade Agreement (CAFTA).
The TSE also said it
will publish the
regulations for the role
of international
observers in the first
referendum ever held in
the country,
