EU Observers to
Guatemalan Elections
The European Union,
among other
institutions, will
monitor the elections in
Guatemala, where this
campaign is considered
the most violent since
democracy was restored.
Forty-six EU officials
are an advance party of
the 100-strong mission
invited by the
government that will
meet with, among others,
election officials and
candidates to the
September 9 ballot.
Jose Antonio de Gabriel,
second chief of the
mission, said they will
cover all 22 departments
with support from a
security escort
coordinated by the
Interior Ministry.
The Organization of
American States, el
Mirador Electoral, San
Carlos University and
other government bodies
will also monitor the
election of a president,
vice president,
legislators and
municipal authorities.
The EU mission has
voiced concern at the
violence reported during
the campaign, which
according to
humanitarian
organizations, has
reached 42 dead so far. |
