Youth Alphabetize in
Panama
Over 3,000 Panamanian
youth are currently
working as volunteers in
eight provinces, to
achieve the United
Nations declare this
country free of
illiteracy by 2009.
The literacy campaign
denominated "Muevete por
Panama" aims to teach
nearly 200,000 people to
read and write in that
brief period, applying
the Cuban method "Yo Si
Puedo" (Yes, I Can),
used successfully in
several countries.
Panamanian President
Martin Torrijos opened
Monday the first
Voluntary Center of the
Social Development
Ministry, with the aim
of training 5,000 youth
who will participate in
the campaign.
In the act, Torrijos
stated that the need of
a literacy program
emerged when the
government started a
program of monetary aid
to rural low-income
families, so they sent
their sons to school and
vaccine them.
According to the last
census, Panama has about
170,000 illiterate
people, of them 30,821
are in the capital, but
it is estimated that the
figure could be higher. |
