Farmers for the
Environment
More than 200,000
hectares (642,460 acres)
of the territory of
Costa Rica are wildlife
refuges now, thanks to
the initiative of the
farmers who own that
land.
These voluntary
preservation efforts
have made of Costa Rica
a pioneer in this area
and a role model for
Mexico, Belize, Panama,
Honduras, Guatemala, and
Nicaragua.
Thanks to this program,
the Government has saved
one third of the funds
allocated to traditional
preservation plans,
while the farmers have
seen their income grow
from eco-tourism,
sustainable ranching and
farming, and from
payment for
environmental services. |
