Mafias Retake Main
Guatemala Jail Control
At least two groups of
prisoners retook control
of the largest
Guatemalan jail of Pavon,
to plan criminal actions
and traffic drugs,
according to an
accusation published in
this capital Monday.
Despite the government
has eradicated the
Mafias after an
operation in prison in
September 2006, a report
from "Prensa Libre"
newspaper indicates the
presence of those bands
led by Daniel Oswaldo
Fuentes and Jorge Mario
Moreira.
The daily confirms that
those prisoners strive
for exercising full
dominion of the prison,
through extortions to
other inmates and
corruption by the
administrative and
security staff.
The main leaders of
those prison bands died
in a confused
confrontation with
authorities during the
September operation.
The Guatemalan prison
system has been marked
several times for being
a center of criminal
operations, from where
they prepare robberies,
kidnappings and
