Argentine, Danish presidents
meet on barriers to Mercosur-EU
accord

Kirchner met his Danish
counterpart Anders Fogh
Rasmussen here on Tuesday to
discuss the barriers blocking an
accord between the Southern
Common Market (Mercosur) and the
European Union, the Argentine
government said in a statement.
The leaders also discussed human
rights, international terrorism,
the proliferation of weapons of
mass destruction and the Doha
round of World Trade
Organization talks, according to
the statement.
Both leaders agreed to explore
ways to boost cooperation
between Denmark and Argentina,
home to the second-largest
Danish community overseas after
the United States.
Mercosur, a trade bloc made up
of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay,
Uruguay and Venezuela, rejects
the EU's agriculture subsidies
while demanding greater
concessions for its products to
enter Europe. The two sides have
been negotiating an agreement
since the1990s.
After talks with Kirchner,
Rasmussen formally opened the
Danish Embassy in Buenos Aires,
which had previously served as a
consulate.
Bilateral trade hit 402 million
U.S. dollars in 2006, with
Argentina registering a
172-million-dollar export
surplus.
On Wednesday, Rasmussen will
travel to Brazil, the second and
final stop on his South American
tour.
