156 Women Killed in Guatemala
This Year
At least 156 women were killed
in Guatemala in the first
quarter this year, according to
a report released on Tuesday.
The document, drafted by the
Guatemala's Congressional
Committee on Women, said that
crimes against women increased
by 24.8 percent against the same
period last year.
The victims, with ages ranging
between 16 and 40 years old,
were mostly tortured and abused.
President of the Congressional
Committee on Women, Nineth
Montenegro, lamented that
progress has not been made in
most of the investigations of
these murder cases.
The country ranks second
worldwide among those with the
highest rate of feminicide, with
572 cases registered last year,
according to Guatemala's
Information Reports Center,
which has been in charge of
research about the issue for
several years.
