Panama Prisoners, 7,000 Without
Trial
More than 63 percent of the
11,341 people behind bars in
Panama have not been tried, the
Panamanian Ministry of Interior
revealed on Wednesday.
Local Alianza Ciudadana Pro
Justicia (Citizens Alliance for
Justice) recently denounced the
percentage of convicts without a
sentence increased from 54 to 60
percent last year.
Magaly Castillo, president of
ACPJ, said traditional
deficiencies in the Panamanian
penal system are getting worse.
Official data shows that in July
2006, the capacity of the penal
precincts in Panama was for
7,246 convicts, but there were
11,809 prisoners in them.
"We are one of the countries
with the highest index of
convicts per inhabitant,"
Castillo said.
Together with the violence and
demands over administrative
irregularities, stacking is one
of the main problems faced by
Panamanian prisons.
