Nicaraguan Authorities Hit
Sinaloa Cartel
The Nicaraguan National Police
said on Wednesday that
operations continue to
disarticulate a logistic base
built by Mexico s Sinaloa cartel
to smuggle drugs through
Nicaraguan territory.
Police Chief Denis Tinoco told
Channel 2 they are working on
the basis of intelligence
information collected by the
police and the Army.
He confirmed that 21 people
linked to the drug trafficking
network have been arrested so
far.
There is proof that this is the
logistic network that has turned
Nicaragua into a transit point
for international drug traffic,
stressed Tinoco, who said that
six Mexicans and two Guatemalans
were arrested.
Operation Phoenix, he explained,
began Friday when Mexican
citizens were arrested on the
Pan-American Highway.
On Saturday, police and Army
forces raided several
storehouses and properties
throughout the country,
including a farm 42 miles from
Managua, where a clandestine
landing strip had been built.
The police seized firearms,
communication equipment, lamps
and other military supplies. A
Mexican man with the word
Sinaloa tattooed on his back was
arrested at the farm.
