Taxi Drivers To Go On Strike
Mark May 15 on your calendar
because this will be the day
that the regular taxis will go a
one day strike.
The taxi drivers are protesting
to demand the elimination in the
Código de Comercio to eliminate
the "porteo" - the informal taxi
business.
Taxi drivers argue that many
pirate taxis mask as porteadores
and are affecting their business
and putting the public at risk.
Pirate taxis operate similar to
the regular taxis, picking up
fares on the street, while
porteadores are providing a
"door to door" service to their
clients.
Gilberth Ureña, a spokesperson
for the Foro Nacional de
Taxistas, said that taxi drivers
from all over the country, save
Pérez Zeledón and Guanacaste,
who hold their own protest, will
descend on San José for a show
of unity.
