Panamanian Children Starve to
Death
UNICEF denounced the death of
three Panamanian indigenous
children, who died of hunger,
and criticized the country for
not having a plan to acquire
food for poor people.
In declarations to the press
Friday, UNICEF Panama director
Fernando Carrera declared it a
national tragedy and that it was
unbelievable such a thing could
happen in a fully developed
country in the 21st Century.
The children starved to death
four weeks ago in Tuira, Embera
Wounaan, in the western province
of Darien.
Carrera expressed amazement that
authorities asked UNICEF for
food assistance to Darien,
because "this country has many
resources and it is not a
recipient of international aid."
While national poverty in Panama
is 40 percent, 67.5 percent of
the inhabitants of Darien are
poor people.
