Salvadorans Tribute War Victims
Thousands of Salvadorans
attended the closing ceremony of
Festival Verdad (Truth Festival)
on Monday, remembering the
assassinations committed by the
paramilitary in the 1980 s and
denouncing the impunity
prevailing in the country.
The 10th edition of the festival
was held in the Central American
University (UCA), and paid
tribute to Maria Julia
Hernandez, who was heading the
Archbishopric Legal Protection
Office in El Salvador when she
died on Friday.
"Hernandez gave her life to this
land, and dignified the victims
of the death squads," said the
UCA Human Rights Institute
Director Benjamin Cuellar.
Despite the 12-year-old war
ended 15 years ago in El
Salvador, those murders continue
unpunished under an amnesty law,
approved by the Congress in
1993, added Cuellar.
The director recalled that
Hernandez disregarded death
threats and denounced the
atrocities committed by the
military and death squads.
