Panama Backs Ecuador on Banana Dispute
Panama joined Monday the consultation process Ecuador requested at the World Trade Organization (WTO) for the tax regime imposed by the European Union (EU) to the Latin American banana.

"We consider the measures adopted by the EU are incompatible to those obligations contracted through the general accord on the 1994 Customs and Trade Taxes," states a release from the Trade and Industry Ministry.

According to the text, it is impossible to maintain a tax to all banana-producing countries and generate an exceptional system with better guarantees of access for other partners.

The note alludes advantages Europeans gives to African, Caribbean and Pacific nations.

Ecuador's action revealed the need of measuring the impact of some policies on our peoples and especially in those countries where the level of production is high, points out the document.
