Fidel Castro to Lead Cuba at NAM
Cuban President Fidel Castro will officially head the Cuban delegation to the 14th Summit of the Non-Aligned Countries Movement (NAM), Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque informed, adding that the statesman is recuperating satisfactorily.

"President Fidel Castro is accredited with the organizing committee as the official head of the Cuban delegation,” Perez Roque told the more than a thousand reporters covering the Summit.

He added that second in command is First Vice President Raul Castro, to whom the president provisionally delegated his functions leading the government, the State, the Communist Party and the Revolutionary Armed Forces on July 31, for reasons of health.

Cuba´s diplomatic chief confirmed that Fidel Castro will receive some of the foreign dignitaries, including UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, attending the NAM Summit, which is meeting in Havana from September 11-16.

While we cannot state categorically that the president will be physically present during the workings of the Summit, we can confirm that he has followed all details for the preparation of the Cuban delegation and the organization for the event, and is in constant communication with the nation´s leadership, Perez Roque asserted.

Cubans are serene and share the president´s complete confidence in Raul Castro´s ability, authority and harmony with the thinking of Fidel Castro and the projections of the Cuban Revolution, the Chancellor added.

He admitted that the president would not be present at all of the NAM Summit debates as he “is fulfilling with discipline the prescriptions of the physicians in order to completely recover his health,” but that he would be actively following them, and the meeting is expected to be an important event for the countries of the Third World.
