Calderon Named Mexican President
The Mexican Judicial Power´s
Electoral Court (TEPJ) named
rightwing candidate Felipe de
Jesus Calderon Hinojosa, the
darling of the governing PAN
party, the US, and a
neoliberalism partisan, as
president-elect Tuesday in a
"close vote".
Calderon Hinojosa, 43, has had a
meteoric career in PAN (Accion
Nacional) since right out of law
school and, as a congressman,
was active in supporting NAFTA
(1994).
Although he lost the election
for governor of his birth state,
Michoacan, in 1995, he became
the youngest president of PAN
the following year, when he was
only 34. His father Luis
Calderon was one of the founding
ideologues of that party.
Among his most remembered
political stances has been his
opposition to the Zapatista Army
of National Liberation (EZLN)
and his alignment with foreign
capital for re-privatization, as
well as his “banking rescue”
that put the country in debt for
more than 100 billion dollars to
save private banks.
The opposition coalition Por el
bien de todos, which has
protested numerous instances of
electoral fraud and has said it
would not recognize Calderon
Hinojosa without a complete vote
recount, describes the man who
will assume power in Mexico for
the next six years as an
“employee of privileged groups”.
