Over 3 Million Cuban Students
Start Classes
Over three million Cuban
students attend Monday the
beginning of the 2006-2007
school year, with a record
registration in Higher
Education.
This higher educational level
reports more than 620,000 new
registrations in different
academic fields, applied in
3,000 municipal universities in
the country's 169
municipalities.
The total figure of students in
13,400 schools includes 500,000
scholarship holders and one
million semi-boarders, Granma
newspaper reports today.
Higher Education Minister Juan
Vela reported increased
registration, and as priorities
he mentioned postgraduate
courses for teachers, the
Congress of the Federation of
University Students and, in
general, improving the quality
of teaching.
Six years ago, Cuba started an
educational revolution, boosted
by President Fidel Castro and
marked by the reduction of
number of students per
classroom, introduction of
audio-visual aids like
computers, television and video,
and personalized attention for
each pupil.
The aim is to make students
learn more and maintain levels
of one teacher per 15 students
in Junior High School and 20 in
Primary School.
