will be protesting on the
streets of San José and will no
doubt cause all sorts of traffic
chaos. More than normal for a
Tuesday.
Alcatel's Alleged Bribery
Payments doubled
Costa Rica's attorney general
has calculated that the local
unit of French equipment
supplier Alcatel paid bribes
amounting to us$17.8 million
during 2000-2003, rather than
us$9.6 million as originally
thought.
Egypt Decides to Restore Ties

Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed
Abul Gheit said on Monday that
measures were underway to
restore diplomatic relations
between Egypt and Costa Rica and
El Salvador, MENA news agency
reported.
Cost Of
Living Drops
The cost of living in Costa Rica
dropped, according to the Indice
de Precios al Consumidor (IPC) -
consumer price index - to 0.88%
last month as compared to 1.25%
for August of 2005. The
information was revealed by the
Instituto Nacional de
Estadísticas y Censo (INEC)
along with a new list of
products that makes up the
"canasta básica" (basic basket).

Peace Torch Expected Early
The Antorcha Centroamericana de
la Paz (Central American Torch
for Peace) is expected to reach
Costa Rica earlier than
expected. The torch was handed
over to El Salvador authorities
two days earlier than expected
and will reach Costa Rica by
September 13 and not September
15, Independence Day in Costa
Rica.
