Panama Tests Canal Referendum
Panama tests Monday a referendum
on the 5.2 billion dollar
expansion of the Canal slated
for October 22nd.
The Election Court (TE) has held
12 trials to gauge data
transmission speed and
efficiency and submitted the
draft regulations to the
registered parties and
organizations to promote or
reject it.
National Scrutiny Commission
President, Ernesto Boyd,
announced a general trial two
days ahead of the referendum
involving 2.1 million voters.
Turn out may be announced on the
24th or Thursday.
National Police Director Rolando
Mirones talked of several
meetings with the TE Judges to
consolidate a security strategy
prior, during and after the
process involving 12,000
policemen.
Both supporters and detractors
campaign to attract voters, and
a recent poll by Dichter Neira
firm indicates 24.8 - 63.9
percent support the measure.
